Make new in old - with this in mind the East Berlin municipal council created a quarter as never seen before in 1987 for Berlin's 750th anniversary in the heart of the "East German capital" as it was then. Prefabricated slab buildings in the back, sandstone facades at the front: 800 flats, shops, hospitality. Right in the middle of the St. Nicholas' Quarter is the "Nußbaum" (The Nut Tree). Heinrich Zilles' regular pub, often drawn by him. This too is a decorative new building. The original "Nußbaum" was somewhere completely different, on the Fischerinsel (Fishermen's Island).
