(Cathedral)

Built on the site of the Moorish mosque to symbolise the expulsion of the Moors from the city, the magnificent 13th to 15th century cathedral is one of only a few in the Algarve to retain its medieval feel. Free from the gilded baroque woodwork of many post-earthquake churches, the rose-pink granite columns and vaults soar above the tombs of medieval knights and bishops. Outside, the top of the granite wall lining the steps up to the cathedral has been polished smooth by generations of children using it as a slide.
