The cathedral is the centre around which medieval Barcelona revolves. The original 4th-century building, certainly a church of considerable importance if we remember that a Council was help here in the year 559, was destroyed by Almanzor in 985. Its successor, a Romanesque construction, was built between 1046 and 1058. In 1289, by command of King James II, building on the present Gothic Cathedral began, completed in 1448, though the front and the magnificent dome (1913) were constructed around the end of the 19th century thanks to the munificence of the banker and mayor of the city, Manuel Girona.
